Surface Pro 9, Laptop 5 and Studio 2+

Microsoft doesn’t just provide the Windows operating system, it has also been selling computers, through its Surface brand, for years. This brand has been around for precisely 10 years, and with each generation Microsoft makes improvements.

During its event dedicated to hardware, organized this week, the firm lifted the veil on three new PCs: the Surface Pro 9, the Surface Laptop 5, and the Surface Studio 2+.

Surface Pro 9: the same format, with new processors

In terms of design, the Surface Pro 9 is very similar to its predecessor, with the PC / tablet format that Microsoft had accustomed us to. The device has a 13-inch screen, with a resolution of 2880 × 1920 (267 DPI), and protection by Gorilla Glass 5 glass. For video conferencing, Microsoft’s new 2-in-1 offers a 10-megapixel webcam with auto focus.

The great novelty of this new generation of Surface Pro concerns the processors. Indeed, the Redmond company gives the choice between a version with a 12th generation Intel Core i5 or Core i7 processor and Evo certified, or a version with an Arm processor: the Microsoft SQ3 which was developed with Qualcomm.

The fact that Microsoft is offering an Arm version of the new Surface Pro is a validation of this type of processor. And besides, it’s hard to say which version is the best.

In reality, it all depends on how you use your computer. On the one hand, the 12th generation Intel processor, Evo certification, as well as Thunderbolt 4 technology are suitable for heavy tasks. According to Microsoft, the Surface Pro 9 is 50% more efficient than its predecessor.

But if you are a very nomadic worker, then the version with SQ3 processor would suit you better. Indeed, it is equipped with a 5G modem (via a SIM) and the use of an Arm chip also allows for a gain in autonomy: according to Microsoft data, 15.5 hours of use normal for the Intel version, against 7 p.m. for the Arm version.

The Redmond company also praises the performance of the SQ3 processor in terms of artificial intelligence. And besides, on the Surface Pro 9 Arm, we have a 120 Hz screen.

In France, the starting price of the Surface Pro 9 with Intel processor is €1,299. For the version with ARM chip, the starting price is €1,549. A difference that will certainly also influence consumer choice.

Surface Laptop 5: no big changes, either

Like the Surface Pro 9, the Surface Laptop 5 doesn’t differ too much from its predecessor when it comes to design. It thus retains the elegant design of the old Microsoft laptop, but nevertheless benefits from significant improvements in terms of characteristics.

The Surface Laptop 5 is available in 13.5 inches and 15 inches. If you choose the former, you’ll have the choice between a 12th Gen Core i5 processor and a 12th Gen Core i7. If you opt for the 15-inch screen, you’ll get a Core i7.

Like the Surface Pro 9 with Intel processor, the Surface Laptop 5 is Evo certified and therefore also benefits from Thunderbolt 4. In addition, according to Microsoft, it is also 50% more efficient compared to its predecessor.

The starting price is €1,179.

Surface Studio 2+: the surprise

We expected the new Surface Pro and the new Surface Laptop, but not necessarily a new Surface Studio. But according to Microsoft, the evolution of the work environment has increased the demand for this format.

The firm has revised the product by integrating an Intel Core i7 H Series processor, which increases CPU performance by 50%. We also have a GeForce RTX 3060 GPU which doubles the graphics performance.
