Microsoft Office retires after 32 years of loyal service

Microsoft Office was presented in 1988, then launched on November 19, 1990. In a few weeks, Microsoft’s office suite will celebrate its 32nd anniversary. But there will be no 33rd anniversary for Microsoft Office, since after these 32 years of good and loyal service, the brand will retire (or almost).

Rest assured, Microsoft will continue to offer its productivity applications, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc. What changes is that the Redmond company will abandon the “Microsoft Office” brand from this year, in favor of a new branding: Microsoft 365.

Microsoft Office becomes Microsoft 365, with the same apps

This was revealed by the company in a recently published FAQ: “Over the past two years, Microsoft 365 has become our flagship productivity suite, so we’re creating an experience to help you get the most out of Microsoft 365. In the coming months, Office.com, the Office mobile app and Office app for Windows will become the Microsoft 365 app, with a new icon, a new look and even more features.”

This rebranding will apply to the online version first, as the Office.com site will be replaced this November. Then come Office apps for Windows and for mobile platforms in January 2023. These apps will be automatically updated with the new name, logo and icon when the time comes.

The end of an era ?

Microsoft describes the new product as its new, “cloud-powered” productivity platform, which bundles applications from the old Microsoft Office. The latter is becoming an obsolete brand and now, when Microsoft refers to applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneDrive or Teams, it will refer to the Microsoft 365 brand.

By the way, in the official communication from Microsoft, this has already started. For example, in the announcement of its new Designer software (a competitor of Canva doped with artificial intelligence), the firm no longer speaks of Microsoft Office, but uses the Microsoft 365 brand. economics of the productivity suite, from a model where customers buy the software, to another model based on subscriptions.

Moreover, this change of brand, we could have seen it coming. Two years ago, Microsoft had already replaced the Office 365 subscription with Microsoft 365.

However, it should be noted that the Office brand will not disappear completely. In its FAQ, Microsoft indicates that it will continue to offer one-time purchases for its software, via the Office 2021 offer, or Office LTSC.
