A few days ago, we were received by the Bandai Namco teams to discover their new license for the second time: Park Beyond. After a promising first approach at Gamescom, this time we were able to discover three hours of the game with a first scripted mission and the famous free mode. Discover now our first opinion on this title which may well surprise us next year.

Park Beyond, the new kid full of ambitions

For this new test, we were able to play the second mission of the game. We found Phil, the famous visionary who has many successes to his credit with amusement parks that have marked their history… expensive and not always profitable. As well as Izzy, his collaborator who is much less creative, but much more income-oriented. Together, they strike the right balance to create parks and provide financial stability.

This is where we come in. As the third member of the group, we will have the heavy task of deciding and making the decisive decisions that will please one, but displease the other. For this mission, the idea is to embark on a dangerous challenge: to build an amusement park in a remote and abandoned place when society is going badly. If this project fails, bankruptcy will be assured.

From the start of the mission, you have the right to a meeting with your two partners. We thus lay the foundations of the project. Here, the idea is to buy land at a low price, but located in a remote, abandoned place, which looks like anything but an ideal place to build an amusement park.

You will have several choices to make, with proposals. Phil, as a visionary creator, will have a vision, often far-fetched, but very expensive. While Izzy, as a salesperson, will have more down to earth ideas that will secure the finances of the business. You will therefore have to balance the pros and cons, find a happy medium to ensure the success of the mission.

One of the first things you’re going to have to choose is the nature of the park. Are you going to go to a completely crazy place, with things you’ve never done before? Or something more traditional? Will your park be aimed at families? Teenagers? Or adults? These choices are important since they will clearly determine the rest of your mission and your objectives. Once your decisions are made and validated, it’s time to get to work.

To pass your level, you will have several objectives to complete which will come to complete several levels until you reach the final mission and close your chapter. At the beginning, it will be very simple, it will be enough to open the park, create paths so that visitors can move around, connect the attractions to the paths so that visitors can access the rides, create waiting lines and going out areas, opening shops to eat and drink, etc.

Then the more serious things begin. If your park is mainly intended for teenagers, you will have to make sure to charm them first. For this, you will have to build attractions, restaurants, drink stands that will be suitable above all for teenagers. But you shouldn’t neglect adults and families either, at the risk of losing a large clientele. You have to find a happy medium to please everyone. For that, you have to look at every building, every structure, watching who they will like and who they will dislike.

Overall, this first mission acts as a tutorial and remains very accessible to everyone, even if you are not a specialist in management games. On the contrary, it’s a good appetizer and you quickly get caught up in the game. The objectives to be achieved are simple, quick, you must place your first rides, your first drink and food stands, hire your first employees so that your park is clean and well maintained.

You will be able to customize every square meter of your park. Whether it’s shops or attractions, you can choose the appearance and colors of all buildings. Besides that, it’s not about the overall colors of the structure, but each element is customizable! Even better, on the rollercoaster you can customize each car!

The final mission will be to create your first roller coaster. As we were able to tell you in our Gamescom preview, this part of the game is also very detailed. It will allow you to let your imagination express itself in the craziest of ways.

Once you’ve finished building it and done the necessary testing to make sure the ride works and is safe, you’re done with your quest.

Creating a roller coaster is a bit of a “mission within a mission”. Since you will have objectives to fulfill when creating your attraction to precisely please the public you have selected for the construction of your park.

We completed this chapter in about two hours, without encountering any major difficulties. This is a preparation for the rest of the adventure. According to the Bandai Namco teams, around ten chapters will be ready for the release of Park Beyond in 2023 with missions that will inevitably become more and more complex. The scripted side will create crisis situations with rival parks, etc. This will allow Park Beyond to be much more than a simple management game, but also to have an interesting story/challenge part.

To end this preview, we had the opportunity to test the “sandbox” mode. This is the free mode, in which you can simply have fun and create without being constrained with the price or the objectives. This moment especially allowed us to realize how the game promises to be very rich in terms of customization with countless models for your rides.

The same is true for the maps (which will be relatively large) and which you will be able to customize! Create mountains, lakes, forests, tunnels, and more. Clearly, this Park Beyond looks very promising for players who like to create and customize their park and their environment.

Park Beyond: very encouraging beginnings

After more than 3h30 on the game (between Gamescom and this second approach), our feeling about Park Beyond is quite positive. The game does not revolutionize the genre of construction and management games. On the other hand, it brings its little touch of freshness with very good ideas and very many customization possibilities. It’s still too early to draw conclusions, but the Limbic Entertainment teams, the developers who very recently officially joined the Bandai Namco group, seem to be on the right track.

See you in 2023 on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S for the release of the title in order to get a final opinion!
