As we wait for the second installment of Black Panther for more than four years, the big day has finally arrived. But the next MCU movie is shaping up to be a huge question mark for many fans. As Marvel has just lifted the veil on a second trailer, more epic than ever, we take stock of what you need to know before the release of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
When is Black Panther 2 coming to theaters?
Good news : Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will indeed be released in our dark rooms. However, it was not a foregone conclusion. Indeed, Disney is still struggling to digest the new French media chronology and was talking about the possibility of releasing directly Black Panther 2 on Disney+. Skipping the “cinema” box would have been a real shame. Fortunately, the firm of Mickey was not at the end of its threat. Thus, the new opus of Black Panther will be released in French cinemas on Wednesday, November 9, 2022.
According to the new trailer, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever should blow our minds. A dark room experience should delight any Marvel fan, that’s for sure.
Where does Black Panther: Wakanda Forever fit in the MCU?
In 2019, Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home came to close phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and, at the same time, what is called “The Saga of Infinity”. Thus, 2021 marked the beginning of The Saga of the Multiverse with phase 4 of the MCU. The series Wanda Vision, Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Loki opened the ball on the small screen while Black Widow was released in July 2021 in our dark rooms. After six films and no less than nine series, phase 4 concludes on November 9 with the release of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
Who replaces Chadwick Boseman in Black Panther 2?
In August 2020, the production of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever was devastated by the tragic death of Chadwick Boseman, the actor who played T’Challa, ruler of Wakanda, and Black Panther. It’s a real shock for many fans but also for the entire film crew. However, Marvel did not want to replace the actor and wants to pay tribute to him in this new opus.
So the movie Black Panther 2 opens with the Wakandan people mourning the death of T’Challa. The film should, therefore, be filled with very strong emotion. The new trailer for this opus already lets it shine through, much more than the first trailer that we were able to discover this summer. We see the many relatives of T’Challa deeply affected by the disappearance of this one. For sure, Black Panther: Wakanda will have a special flavor for Marvel fans.
Who takes over from Black Panther?
But just because the MCU chose not to replace Chadwick Boseman doesn’t mean Black Panther is no more. Indeed, someone has to take over to protect the bereaved Wakanda. Marvel is careful not to reveal the pot-aux-roses too soon. In the latest trailer for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, we can see, briefly, the worthy heir of Black Panther. Finally, we should rather say the worthy heiress.
Yes, in all likelihood, the future of Black Panther is female. As to whether it is Shuri, Okoye or Nakia under the mask, the mystery still remains. However, rumors seem to agree on the fact that it is very likely that Shuri, T’Challa’s little sister, will take up the torch. In the comics Black Pantherthe young woman has already put on her brother’s costume several times and she has shown enough motivation to take over in this new film.
Who is Namor, the supervillain of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever?
It’s official: Namor will indeed be introduced in the next installment of Black Panther. If at DC, the waters are directed by Aquaman, at Marvel, it is Namor who commands them. While he usually has his hands on Atlantis (in the comics), the Namor of Black Panther is at the head of Talocan, a territory that reminds us of the Mesoamerican civilizations. More anti-hero than real antagonist in the comics, Namor is a Marvel character introduced 83 years ago. Just that! To be precise, he is one of the first characters from the Marvel stables. Mutant, Namor distrusts humans and does not appreciate the surface.
According to the trailers, as Wakandans mourn the death of their ruler, a new threat hangs over their heads: the Feathered Serpent God. However, Namor is not a deity in the comics. But one can imagine that his powers make him a god in the eyes of his people.
In Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, it is Tenoch Huerta who takes on the role of Namor the Prince of the Seas. A real rivalry animated T’Challa and Namor despite a huge common point: that of wanting to protect their respective peoples. The death of the sovereign of Wakanda seems, thus, the opportunity for the Prince of the seas to do as he pleases. It remains to be seen if he will be the only real antagonist of this new opus or if he will face a greater threat and will then have to side with Wakanda.
