The rumors were right. Apple is taking advantage of this October 18, 2022 to formalize its new generation of iPad Pro. These were launched via a simple press release, instead of a (more so) traditional Keynote. After successful iPhone 14 Pro and AirPods Pro 2, Apple is tackling its most powerful tablet, the iPad Pro.

One M2 chip to rule them all
In the tablet market, it is difficult to fight for competition. iPad Mini, iPad, iPad Air or iPad Pro, Apple is very present in all market segments. In June, the brand presented its new M2 chip, which becomes the heart of the iPad Pro 2022. On the program, a performance gain compared to previous versions, but also an ever-widening gap with Android models. The CPU is 15% faster than the M1 models, the 10-core GPU allows a 35% performance boost.
Thanks to this power boost, 3D and editing are even faster. The iPad Pro 2022 can also capture ProRes video, and transcode ProRes footage 3x faster. A camera and a pro editing tool in the same product in summary. On paper, the rear optics are not impressive with a 12 Mpx wide-angle sensor, and a 10 Mpx ultra wide-angle.
The Apple Pencil reinvents itself
Apple is launching a new feature already present to the competition: the hover. In summary, the user can “aim” by being 12 mm above the screen, perfect for anticipating contact points. This functionality also allows for example to enlarge the text fields when the Pencil approaches the screen. For the first time in an iPad, Apple uses Wi-Fi 6E connectivity for even more power. Cellular models are 5G compatible.
No change, however, in slab sizes, with 11″ and 12.9″ models. They are different from each other. The 11″ model is a Liquid Retina with 600 nits peak brightness, wide P3 color gamut, True Tone, and ProMotion. The 12.9″ model features a Liquid Retina XDR display with 1,600 nits peak brightness (and 1,000 nits full-screen brightness), 1,000,000:1 contrast.
An increase in price for the iPad Pro 2022
Apple is doing the classic with several levels of storage and colors. Launched in space gray and silver, the new iPad Pro 2022 is available in the following configurations:
- iPad Pro M2 11″ WiFi 128 GB at 1,069 euros256 GB at 1,199 euros, 512 GB at 1,449 euros, 1 TB at 1,949 euros and 2 TB at 2,449 euros
- Models with 5G connectivity are available for 200 euros more
- iPad Pro M2 12.9″ LTE 128 GB at 1,469 euros256 GB at 1,599 euros, 512 GB at 1,849 euros, 1 TB at 2,349 euros and 2 TB at 2,849 euros
- As for the 11″, add 200 euros for the 5G versions
As you can see, the prices are, as with the iPhone 14, rising sharply. Count 170 euros more for the 11″ version with 128 GB of storage. The most expensive iPad Pro costs… 3,044 euros.
The new iPads are already available for order, deliveries will take place from October 26th.
iPadOS 16 finally arrives!
While iOS 16 arrived with the new iPhone 14s in early September, iPadOS 16 was long overdue. It will be available for download for everyone from October 24, and the iPhon.fr site lists all the compatible models. If the list is substantial with 2017 models, the new Stage Manager feature will only be supported on iPad Air and Pro with (at least) an Apple M1 chip.
Alongside Stage Manager, more than 100 new features are being introduced. Weather application, collaborative project management, SharePlay or automatic Siri shortcuts are among the features that will make iPads even more versatile.
