For a few years now, Samsung has established itself as the undisputed leader in the smartphone market. The South Korean giant is closely followed by the American Apple which, it should be remembered, offers a reduced selection of smartphones, where Samsung is flooding the market with a large number of models. And according to the Daily Koreamore expensive smartphones (the “flagships“) of the Samsung brand would be far from being the most popular…
Samsung: more than 60% of smartphone sales under 200 euros
Indeed, still according to the Korean magazine, smartphones over 300 euros would only constitute 30% of all Samsung smartphones sold. In other words, this obviously includes the high-end Galaxy S terminals, not to mention the Z Fold and other Z Flips, but also the entire mid-range Galaxy A family.
We now know that this same Galaxy A range is regularly part of Samsung’s annual bestsellers, and we can then wonder what share of sales is made up of the firm’s most expensive smartphones.
Still, Samsung’s leading status is mainly driven by entry-level smartphones, since 60% of the terminals sold by Samsung cost less than 200 euros. In the Korean giant’s business strategy, entry-level and mid-range smartphones could not be more crucial, and must now face increasingly fierce competition, especially with Chinese brands such as Xiaomi, Oppo and Realme.
Recently, we learned that Samsung is preparing to announce disastrous quarterly results. Indeed, the Korean giant has just published forecasts for its next quarterly results, and the group expects a drop in operating profit of around 32%. In the third quarter of 2022, Samsung is estimated to have shipped around 66 million smartphones, down 5% year-on-year.
It remains to be seen now whether Samsung will carry out a complete overhaul of its high-end segment with its future generation Galaxy S23. A new generation which should be available at the beginning of 2023, and which could show some changes, especially in the photo section, with a revisited layout and the presence of a 200 megapixel sensor on the premium version.
