Jony Ive’s successor at Apple is already on the way

If Apple is today one of the leaders on smartphones and computers, it is not only thanks to Steve Jobs. Much of the success of the Cupertino company is attributed to Jony Ive who, towards the end of the 90s, took the reins of the company’s design team.

Design plays an important role in the commercial success of Apple products. And Ive was leading the brains behind those designs, until 2019 when he left the company.

Following Jony Ive’s departure, Evans Hankey took over as Vice President of Industrial Design. Prior to this role, Hankey reported to Jony Ive.

Jony Ive’s successor leaves Apple

But, three years after taking over as head of industrial design at the Cupertino company, Evans Hankey is also leaving the company. The info was published by Bloomberg, then confirmed by Apple.

“Apple’s design team brings together expert creatives from around the world and many disciplines to imagine products that are unmistakably Apple”a spokesperson said in a statement. “The senior design team has strong leaders with decades of experience. Evans plans to stay while we go through the transition, and we want to thank her for her leadership and contributions.”

For a company like Apple, which sometimes sacrifices functionality for design, this is an important transition. In addition, according to Bloomberg, the firm may have difficulty finding the right successor.

The American media even explains that for the first time since Steve Jobs took over control of Apple and appointed Jony Ive, the company finds itself without a “de facto design chief”. Apparently, after Ive left, Evans Hankey’s appointment was a no-brainer. Today it would be a bit more complicated.

As Apple prepares for the post-iPhone era

This new start is announced at a time when Apple is preparing for the arrival of new product categories. Indeed, the firm should soon launch its first virtual reality and augmented reality headset.

This launch could take place in early 2023. And within a few years, augmented reality platforms could replace smartphones.

Besides that, Apple is also developing electric (and self-driving) cars. But these should not arrive for several years.

Meanwhile, Jony Ive continues to collaborate with the firm

For the moment, it is not known if Evans Hankey will leave Apple to join another company. As for Jony Ive, after he left, he started a design company called LoveForm, of which Apple became one of the clients.

According to Bloomberg, the contract between Apple and LoveForm ended this year. But recently we learned that Jony Ive has a new collaboration with the Cupertino company, as a producer. Indeed, Ive added his name to content for Apple TV+, the Apple brand’s streaming service.
