In October, GTA (Grand Theft Auto) celebrates its 25th anniversary. The release date of the first opus is a little vague, but the latter arrived between October 17 and 21, 1997. At the time, the legendary star firm, Rockstar Games, did not yet bear this name. It was indeed BMG Interactive and DMA Design who were at the creation of this game which was to become cult in the history of pop culture.
In 25 years, several titles have succeeded, totaling several million copies sold to date. GTA V, the latest opus to date, even has the luxury of being the most profitable cultural entertainment product in history, far ahead of the success of films like Avatar or Marvel’s Avengers Endgame.
Back in figures on the GTA series which started from afar, but which managed to steer the entertainment industry in less than 20 years!
This is the number of games that have been released. In 25 years, no less than 17 GTAs have succeeded on twenty media! That’s four generations of consoles. This represents less than one game per year, knowing that the last opus, GTA 5, was released on September 17, 2013.

This is the number of games sold in 25 years. With 17 games, the GTA license has sold more than 385 million copies. The latest opus, GTA V, is largely responsible for this tremendous success with more than 180 million units sold. But we can also mention GTA San Andreas (27.5 million), GTA IV (25 million) or GTA Vice City (21.6 million) which have contributed enormously to this success.
With over $7.5 billion generated (as of 2018), GTA V has become the highest-grossing cultural entertainment product in history. More profitable than any film, series, or music album. Since then, this figure has undoubtedly exceeded the 10 billion dollar mark, knowing that since 2018, GTA Online has been generating more and more money. It is simply stratospheric.
This is currently the time that fans have been waiting for since the release of the previous game. It has been 9 years since any new unreleased installment of the GTA series has been released or even announced. At the start of 2022, Rockstar Games confirmed that they were working on a new game, stating that development was on track. However, still no official announcement. The maximum time fans have waited until now is five years, between the release of GTA 4 (2008) and GTA 5 (2013). However, the game was announced on October 25, 2011, three years after the release of GTA 4.
This would be the total budget that Take Two Interactive (the owning company of Rockstar Games) would be willing to put on the table for the total development of GTA 6. In 2013, GTA V required $265 million budget for its development. The game had become profitable in just 24 hours and had generated a billion dollars in just three days.
Take Two can thus afford to put such a sum. The most expensive video game in history to date is Red Dead Redemption II, another Rockstar Games title that reportedly cost nearly $944 million to develop.
In comparison, Hollywood blockbusters like Star Wars, Marvel or Avatar cost between 200 and 240 million dollars.
