Here are the police of Twitter, under the era Elon Musk

Now that Elon Musk has taken control of Twitter, changes are expected on the social network. But regarding moderation, and a possible return of those banned from the platform (like former US President Donald Trump), no decision will be made immediately. Indeed, for these questions, Elon Musk’s Twitter intends to rely on the advice of a new entity that the billionaire has announced in a series of publications.

A tip for moderation on Twitter

In a tweet, Musk explains that Twitter will form a content moderation board, with a variety of views. And no major decision will be made before the creation of this council. This concerns both the moderation policy of the platform and the reinstatement of accounts.

In another post, Musk clarified that at this time no changes have been made regarding the moderation policy.

In any case, the new owner of Twitter is not satisfied with the current policy. During the takeover process, he publicly criticized Twitter’s moderation decisions.

And as soon as the social network’s takeover was completed, Musk fired executives, including CEO Parag Agrawal, as well as Vijaya Gadde, head of legal, trust and safety policy.

Elon Musk is already trying to reassure advertisers

Elon Musk defines himself as an absolutist of freedom of expression. This term had been used by the American billionaire when he refused to block Russian media on Starlink in Ukraine unless forced to.

But Twitter also needs advertisers, since the platform generates revenue through advertising. In a letter to advertisers, Musk explains that he bought Twitter because it is important “for the future of civilization” to have a forum where debates, with differing opinions, can take place in a healthy way.

However, he also assured that Twitter will not become a hellhole in which anything can be said without consequence. “In addition to respecting the laws of the country, our platform must be warm and welcoming to all, where you can choose the experience you want according to your preferences.”, can we read in this letter addressed to the advertisers.

A model inspired by Facebook?

At this time, Musk has not provided details on the composition of this council. However, the initiative of the new owner of Twitter is reminiscent of the “supervisory board” set up by Facebook.

As a reminder, this is an independent entity (using a trust fund) which is the equivalent of the United States Supreme Court, for moderation decisions. When a person wants to oppose a Facebook moderation decision, they can submit the case to this supervisory board. And unless it’s against the law, Facebook enforces the advice of this advice.

For example, this council “confirmed”, in 2021, the suspension of the Facebook account of former President Donald Trump.
