Have you installed a good antivirus on your personal and professional computer? If the answer is no, we recommend that you immediately consult our list of the best free antiviruses, because it is indeed possible to protect yourself effectively against most threats in nature for free in a few clicks.
If we start directly with this advice, it is because at the moment several signals are red. Cyberattacks do more and more economic damage and the trend seems far from reversing with the outbreak of war and its cyber counterpart. The French government does not necessarily keep clear statistics on the subject yet, but the statistics available in other countries give an idea of the extent of the phenomenon.
Installing an antivirus on PC and Mac is essential in 2022
Example in the United States with figures from FinCEN, the American agency specializing in monitoring financial crime. In its latest report, we learn that ransomware attacks cost American businesses and individuals $1.2 billion in 2021, compared to $416 million in 2020, $256 million in 2019 and $56 million in 2018. The 2022 figures will fall the year coming, but there is no doubt that the war launched by Russia will not have helped matters.
Ransomware is particularly vicious malware. Often conveyed by seemingly legitimate (but corrupt) applications, these programs begin by encrypting all your most sensitive files with particularly strong algorithms that are virtually impossible to break without the encryption key. Once the damage is done, the computer becomes unusable.
And the user sees an alert message that explains to him that his files are encrypted, and that to recover access to them, he must pay a ransom to hackers in crypto-currencies via an address and instructions that appear on the screen. In some cases, when hackers target sensitive actors, they add the threat of releasing compromising documents – as ransomware can also exfiltrate valuable data.
As a result, many victims end up paying. This creates a real vicious circle against which the authorities have great difficulty in fighting. Cybercriminals, on the other hand, are not burdened with any moral line – in particular we have seen an increase in the power of attacks against hospitals. They, too, have no choice but to pay, often to avoid the leak of medical records and the embarrassment it could cause them.
For the time being, there is only one way to protect yourself against the phenomenon: you absolutely must have an antivirus solution. Microsoft Defender is not enough to detect all the latest ransomware, as new malicious methods constantly thwart its defenses. However, most commercial antiviruses represent a much more effective shield against these threats.
This is particularly the case with Bitdefender, which is number 1 on PCs, or even Norton 360, which recently completely revised its offer.
