Crazy success for the Verkor startup in Grenoble, which manufactures car batteries

Launched in 2020, the Grenoble startup Verkor, specializing in electric batteries for cars, has just succeeded in raising significant funds. After raising 100 million in investments last year, the company indicates that it has received pledges of up to 150 million euros from investors such as the European Investment Bank (49 million euros ), Bpifrance (51 million euros), or even 80 million euros via other financial partners.

Create thousands of jobs in France

This money will prove to be essential for the success of the Isère nugget project. Indeed, it wants to build a real innovation center in Grenoble. 15,000 m² in size, the latter would notably include a research laboratory, as well as a training centre. The idea is to ” meet the growing need for specialized labor in the battery sector “, specifies the company in a press release.

For his part, the Minister of the Economy, Bruno Le Maire, welcomed this news: “ The project developed by Verkor will create thousands of jobs locally and strengthen the battery and automotive industry in France. This promising startup can count on our continued support “.

The announcement is timely, as the European Union has just formalized the end of the sale of thermal vehicles from 2035. The old continent therefore has the imperative to boost its ecosystem of electric cars, and initiatives like that of Verkor are part of this perspective.

We also know that the company benefits from the support of other big names in French industry, and in particular Renault, Arkema, and even Schneifer Electric. Verkor is also working on another major project: the launch of a Gigafactory of low-carbon battery ones in Dunkirk, specify our colleagues from France 3 Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. The 150-hectare factory is supposed to open in 2023, but before that a public consultation will be launched.

Grenoble, fertile ground for the world of Tech

Finally, it is interesting to note that the Grenoble region is very competitive in terms of new technologies. We thus spoke to you last July about this investment of 5.7 billion euros announced by the manufacturers GlobalFoundries and STMicroelectronics to build an electronic chip factory in Crolles. What allow the creation of a thousand additional jobs on site, while STMicroelectronics already has a production site.

The idea is also to fit into a European framework and respond to the “Chips Act”. The latter aims to increase the production capacity of semiconductors on the old continent to 20% of global capacity by 2030.
