what is Motorola’s neo-retro folding smartphone worth?

11

Formerly market leader in telephony, Motorola is struggling to regain its place in smartphones. At least in France.

If the manufacturer is shunned by French consumers, it is positioned in the top 3 in the United States and even imposes itself as the leader in Brazil. No Motorola is not dead, quite the contrary.

The manufacturer’s new strategy in France is currently paying off, explained Camille Castinel, Marketing Director of Motorola France, in an interview with Presse-citron.

The lack of love for the brand is all the more incomprehensible as its products are good. Sometimes even excellent. Above all, Motorola does not lack audacity.

For example, the Chinese-American is the only manufacturer to offer folding smartphones in France, with Samsung (market leader) and Huawei (unfortunately forgotten since the American embargo).

So inevitably, when Motorola presented its new Razr 2022its second folding smartphone (after a first failed model) heir to the legendary Razr, we really wanted to test it.

Motorola Razr 2022 price and availability

The Motorola Razr 2022 is already available at a price of 1,299 euros in a single 8/256 GB version. For comparison, Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip4 is offered at 1,109 euros on the official website for the same storage capacity.

The Motorola Razr therefore has an ultra-premium positioning which places it in direct confrontation with the Samsung smartphone. In France, there is no other folding smartphone with this clamshell format, with the exception of Huawei’s P50 Pocket which does not have Google services.

💚 What we love about the Motorola Razr 2022

Its neo-retro design

Like its predecessor, the Razr 2022 will take an entire generation back to the not-so-distant (if?) days of flip cell phones. Motorola combines nostalgia and modernity with nuance, for a convincing result.

We therefore find the rounded curves of the very first Razr with a matt frosted glass coating of the most beautiful effect. Dressed all in black, the Razr 2022 is less fashionable than its rawer Korean rival.

It is nonetheless attractive and pleasant to handle. If we regret its thick black borders, we salute the excellent work on the folding of the screen. She hardly feels and sees herself.

Also well seen, the little “clap” that sounds each time the device is opened. Another welcome touch of nostalgia. It will also be noted that the Razr 2022 is the nicest folding smartphone to unfold. The movement is fluid, the stop abrupt, like in the good old days. It is in any case, in our opinion, this folding smartphone offering the best ergonomics.

What screen(s)!

Like the Galaxy Z Flip4, the Razr 2022 incorporates two screens. A flexible inside and another, smaller outside. The latter, with AMOLED technology, measures 2.7” diagonally. It is more comfortable than that of Samsung’s folding smartphone but remains a daily consultation tool.

The big attraction is of course the inner screen. Motorola opts for a 6.7” Full HD AMOLED panel in 20:9 format. Capable of displaying a billion colors, it is also distinguished by its refresh rate of 144 Hz and its careful integration. The screen indeed extends along the edges. A very small punch hides the 32 Mpxl front sensor. And that’s all.

Very bright, the screen of the Razr 2022 will meet the expectations of any user. Players and lovers of movies and series will not shy away from their pleasure either. A delight.

Its excellent performance

The Motorola Razr 2022 is on board Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, Qualcomm’s most powerful chip available to date. Accompanied by 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage, it provides a very high level of performance. Thus, the Razr 2022 ranks among the most powerful smartphones on the market.

We can therefore do everything with this smartphone without ever fearing a slowdown, bug or other freeze. The latest 3D games of the moment run smoothly and multitasking is perfectly managed. So nothing to report.

These good impressions are reinforced by minimalist software choices. The Razr 2022 ships a pure version of Android with some small home features. Everything is brought together in the Moto application, which makes it possible to centralize these adjustments, which are always welcome and above all useful.

Its autonomy and recharging

Until now, no flip-folding smartphone has managed to be among the most enduring models. This may be due to their format, forcing manufacturers to limit battery capacity. Unless it is the integration of two screens that are too resource intensive. Or an optimization concern.

Anyway, the Razr 2022 does not do differently from the others and therefore proves to be durable enough to hold a whole day of intensive use, but no more. It’s not extraordinary but good enough to consider buying such a model without fear of running out of fuel. Users less glued to their smartphone can even hope to recharge the Razr 2022 after a day and a half of use. Rather not bad.

🔴 What we like less

Its charging too slow

If the autonomy of the Razr 2022 is good, the same cannot be said for its charging performance. Motorola may deliver its smartphone with a charger (a rare thing now in the premium segment), its performance is quite disappointing.

With a power of 30W it only reaches the 37% in 30 minutes of charging. Count nearly 1h30 for a full charge. A score that is far too fair for a smartphone at this price.

Motorola could have consoled us if the Razr 2022 was compatible with wireless charging. This is not the case. So we end up with a smartphone over 1,000 euros, unable to recharge quickly and without wireless charging. The account is not there.

Its barely passable camera

At least Motorola has the merit of trying. With the Razr 2022, the manufacturer corrects most of the problems of the previous model. Its new folding smartphone takes a main sensor of 50 Mpxl with a wide-angle lens (f/1.8). At its side, an ultra wide-angle lens (f / 2.2) also capable of macro photography is associated with a 13 Mpxl sensor.

On paper, the Razr 2022 therefore looks promising. Unfortunately, hardware isn’t everything. We could even safely say that the quality of a smartphone’s camera depends above all on its processing algorithms. Alas, this little game, Motorola does not seem to be developed.

If the daytime photos are quite correct with the main sensor, things go wrong as soon as the light runs out. In low light and at night, the Razr 2022 disappoints. And that goes for its ultra-wide angle too. We even note too big a difference in rendering between the photos taken at wide-angle and ultra-wide-angle.

Only the portrait mode gets away with the honors. The macro mode, it does not demerit, but remains anecdotal with regard to the frequency at which it is used.

Above all, we do not understand how Motorola was able to shoot itself in the foot by limiting the use of the main sensor when the smarpthone is folded. The advantage of the folding (and the external screen) is to be able to shoot selfies or perform long exposures, even timelapses with the main lens and the ultra wide-angle. For some unknown reason, the 50 Mpxl sensor only allows you to shoot snapshots in 9.4 Mpxl and the 13 Mpxl in 9.7 Mpxl when the phone is folded.

Fortunately, the Razr 2022 has a 32 Mpxl front sensor which is very convincing. We regret that the other optics of the device have not been the subject of the same attention.

On the video side, the Razr 2022 saves the furniture with good image stabilization in 4K at 60 fps. It can also film in 8K at 30 fps but stabilization takes a hit. We therefore do not recommend it.

If the photo experience is not the most qualitative, the folding format at least allows you to vary the pleasures since you can put the phone in L to film yourself or take group photos with a better overview. Like the Galaxy Flip4, it can be held like an old camcorder when filming. Insufficient to console, but nice all the same.

Our opinion on the Motorola Razr 2022

After a first missed folding smartphone, Motorola returns with a much more convincing Razr 2022. Very powerful, it has a magnificent internal screen and an interesting advisory secondary screen. Its good autonomy (for a folding smartphone) is also one of its main assets.

But the Razr 2022 is above all a well-designed folding smartphone, combining nostalgia and modernity. Motorola has also succeeded in taming the damn fold of the screen, which we hardly feel and see. And this “clap” at each opening, a nectar.

Even so, the Razr 2022 faces the harsh reality of the market. Its barely passable camera, the absence of wireless charging or even too slow wired charging remain too significant faults in view of its price.

When you pay 1,300 euros, you have the right to expect an almost flawless smartphone. The touch of nostalgia does not change anything. Come on, one more Motorola effort.
