Elon Musk fumbles, Twitter’s ‘official’ badge is already dropped

Elon Musk wants to change a lot of things on Twitter. And among the projects he announced, there is that of a new $8 subscription that would give easy access to the famous blue badge of the social network.

The new owner of Twitter seems to make the paid version of the social network a priority. Which is normal, since this paid version, if it has more subscribers, would allow Twitter to be less dependent on advertisements, and therefore on advertisers.

The problem is that if the blue badge (which acts as a verification) becomes readily available to paid Twitter subscribers, it will be difficult to distinguish the accounts of ordinary users from official accounts of governments, companies, celebrities etc These badges are indeed an effective way to fight against usurpations on social networks, and not only on Twitter.

The gray badge does not pass

The solution drawn by Elon Musk’s team: a new “official” badge. In essence, since the blue badge becomes ordinary, the social network wanted to propose another one that would certify the “official” accounts of governments, companies, media, and other public figures.

Normally, such changes are rolled out gradually. But not on Elon Musk’s social network.

Yesterday, after the announcement of the gray badge, which should serve as certification for “official” accounts, it began to appear on certain accounts. But it only seems to have lasted a few hours.

Indeed, the gray badge disappeared soon after. And today, it seems that Twitter has completely abandoned the project.

As the Gizmodo site reports, during a Twitter Space chat, Musk commented on the fiasco, admitting it was a bad idea. The problem, according to him, besides the fact that it was far from aesthetic, is that it created a new system with two classes of users. Musk also confirmed that he “killed” this gray badge, in response to a netizen.

In any case, Elon Musk assumes his method, although this may create confusion among users. “Please note that Twitter will be doing a lot of stupid things in the coming months. We will keep what works and change what does not work”we read in a recent publication.

“There are no more sacred cows in products on Twitter. Elon is willing to try many things – many will fail, some will succeed. The goal is to find the right combination of successful changes to ensure the long-term health and growth of the business”said Esther Crawford, one of the leaders of the social network.

Elon Musk is also interested in payment

Note that in addition to developing a new paid subscription, Twitter also wants to get into payment services. As TechCrunch reports, during his Twitter Space, Musk suggested that later it will be possible to send money through the social network.

And obviously, it’s very serious. Indeed, Twitter has already filed the necessary documents with the American authorities, in order to launch this payment functionality.

It should be remembered that the payment would bring Twitter closer to Elon Musk’s long-term vision, which is to create an equivalent of WeChat (a Chinese messaging app that includes many other features) for Western countries.
