Microsoft admits it, the console war is lost

Remember, a few months ago, Microsoft announced the acquisition of Activision-Blizzard, for the tidy sum of 68.7 billion dollars. A takeover which is still subject to validation, and which could allow Microsoft to get its hands on some prestigious licenses, starting of course with Call of Duty. Forced to defend this future acquisition with the competent authorities, Microsoft agrees to provide various information relating to the “console war”.

For Microsoft, “Sony is the market leader”

Indeed, last August, Microsoft officially indicated: “Sony has overtaken Microsoft in console sales and installed base, having sold more than twice as many PS4s (as Xbox One) in the last generation“. With a PS4 flirting with 120 million in sales, we therefore deduced that Xbox One sales should therefore be between 50 and 60 million.

Faced with the European Commission, Microsoft is once again obliged to explain this upcoming takeover, to reassure the authorities… and to make new confidences. The organization will have until March 23, 2023 to render its decision, obviously taking into account the information provided by the American giant, and will therefore have to decide whether the operation is likely to significantly reduce competition on the distribution markets of video games for consoles and PC.

On the Sony side, we are obviously worried about Call of Duty, but Microsoft recently wanted to reassure the crowds by stating: “Sony is the market leader“. A new confidence from Microsoft therefore, which no longer hesitates to publicly indicate (and it is in its interest of course) the domination of its Japanese rival.

In addition, Microsoft has again confirmed its desire to make Call of Duty games available on Xbox of course, but also on PlayStation, without any exclusivity for the home console. Microsoft repeats it, so everyone will be entitled to their new “Call of” at the same time. Phew!

We will have to wait a few more months to find out whether or not the takeover of Activision-Blizzard by Microsoft will indeed be approved. There is no doubt that on the side of Sony, we will do everything possible to try to derail the operation with the various competition authorities. Verdict expected in the first quarter of 2023 therefore. In the meantime, you can still enjoy the latest Call of Duty, no matter you play on Xbox or PS5.
