What are the best cities for startups? Each year, Startup Blink offers its global and national ranking, an opportunity to see the dynamics in entrepreneurship. In France, the top 30 cities most conducive to the development of startups have just been released. And there is movement.

To establish its ranking, Startup Blink’s annual study takes into account several criteria and closely follows the evolution of local startups, accelerators/incubators, hiring, research and development, as well as coworking spaces. . Good news, France is particularly well represented on the world ranking.

What is happening in Montpellier, Biarritz and Grenoble?

We can discover that several French cities are making quite a big breakthrough in the rankings. Dynamics that could lead them to become, tomorrow, very attractive areas for entrepreneurs and investors. Biarritz, ranked 19th, moved up two places in the standings, as did Grenoble, to 8th place.

Montpellier, ranked in 9th position (+2) was the subject of a special format on lemon squeezer. We had come to meet the manager of French Tech Méditerranée to better understand what made the region attractive. Over the past three years, many nuggets have come out of there, and investors are more and more numerous.

Grenoble, Biarritz, Montpellier, here are three cities to remember for French Tech. We remember that in the context of Biarritz, on the Basque coast, multiple events are organized. At the end of August, in the cryptocurrency community, the Surfin’Bitcoin event has been held for three years. In Grenoble, universities and laboratories promote their attractiveness. Verkor, a battery startup for electric cars, has just raised 150 million euros. In Montpellier, finally, the unicorn Swile has revolutionized the world of restaurant tickets.

Paris or Toulouse?

At the top of the ranking, entrepreneurs will increasingly have a dilemma. The podium of the best cities for a startup brought out Toulouse, in second position, after Paris which continues to dominate the ranking. The capital is very far ahead according to the score of Startup Blink (52,877 vs 4,974). But to choose, the entrepreneurs will have to take into account the prices of the real estate, just like the competition.

As Renaud Lataguerra, the founder of We Craft Apps in Nantes (ranked 5th), explained to us last summer, one of the most important things for a start-up is certainly mutual aid. He explained part of his success by the fact that “all the actors of the territory have worked so that companies like ours can exist and develop favorably”. In Paris, the competition can become more intense and development can therefore be more complicated. Nevertheless, for a well-launched startup, Paris is still the 10th most favorable city for a startup in the world ranking, after Tel Aviv.

Lyon overtakes Marseille

Interesting point to note in the rest of the ranking, Lyon has just overtaken Marseille. In third place, the city at the confluence of the Saône and the Rhône has certainly succeeded thanks to the evolution of its infrastructures for entrepreneurs such as the H7 pool, little brother of Station F in Paris. Universities and research, especially scientific, are at the forefront. There are many coworkings.

According to the scores of Startup Blink, the difference is not significant, however, between the two cities. It is more so with Nantes, which ranks fifth. Apart from a few points, Lyon could have surpassed Toulouse as well.

No cities in Corsica or Bourgogne-Franche-Comté

“For a long time, France dreamed of having its own Silicon Valley. But we realized that innovation in France was everywhere”, explained Clément Saad, the President of the French Tech branch based in Montpellier. His remarks, last March, still find an echo in view of the number of dynamic cities in France for entrepreneurship. That said, inequalities are still very visible.

Thus, the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, PACA, Nouvelle-Aquitaine and Grand Est regions each have 4 cities in the ranking of the best cities for startups in the world. On the other hand, Corsica and the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region are not represented. In Ile-de-France too, there is only Paris in the ranking, enough to realize the equally visible centralization of the economy in our country.
