The Euro NCAP crash test reveals its future (and its requirements)

It is a well-known name in the automotive industry. The Euro NCAP crash test is getting a makeover. First of all, remember that the European New Car Assessment Program is an independent international organization created in 1997. It tests a vehicle’s ability to protect its passengers, as well as vulnerable road users such as pedestrians or cyclists.

Target zero deaths

In a document published on Wednesday, the body unveiled a new roadmap called Vision 2030. The objective is to modify the crash tests in order to take into account the technological evolution of vehicles. Everything will start in 2026 but will then materialize in the following three years

To do this, the organization will target four major areas related to road safety: safe driving, accident prevention, protection against accidents, and safety after an accident. In particular, the body says it wants to improve tests for protection of vulnerable road users, and will introduce rating incentives for a series of driver monitoring systems.

Likewise, the test will include evaluation of assisted and automated driver assistance systems, as well as evaluation of technology that monitors driver impairment. New requirements to improve the actual effectiveness of speed assist technologies will also be introduced.
