It is a subject that is the object of many fantasies. The remuneration of film and series stars largely depends on the fierce competition between major platforms and studios to attract top talent. The Hollywood Reporter has recently published a particularly instructive inventory on the subject. We supplemented their analysis with our own research.
Highly variable remuneration for actors
As far as the actors are concerned, the fees are on average between 2 and 4 million per film, according to our colleagues. But these figures hide huge disparities. Thus, some smart guys like manage to earn astronomical amounts. This is the case Tom Cruise who earned more than 100 million dollars this year thanks to the success of Top Gun: Maverick.
As for Tom Hardy, he pocketed $20 million for the next Venom 3. Dwayne Johnson does better on black adam ($22.5 million), while Brad Pitt collected a check for $30 million for Bullet Train.
But not everyone can say the same. For example Jonathan Majors who plays Kang, the new big bad of the MCU only earns a million dollars per film. For her part, the in demand Zendaya recovers between 8 and 10 million dollars for her role in Challengers. That’s less than Margot Robbie who earned $12.5 million for portraying Barbie.
For series, the average income is around $40,000 per episode. But if you are dealing with a big star, prices can quickly soar and reach between 250,000 and 300,000 dollars, or even 500,000 for very big stars.
Deep disparities among directors
The difference in treatment is even more glaring for filmmakers. The average thus varies between 450,000 and 750,000 dollars for a first film. Then, as they go, they can hope to earn more: between 1 and 2 million for the second film, and up to between 4 and 7 million dollars with certain broadcasters. Finally, the legends of the seventh art can recover up to 20 million dollars per feature film in addition to box office bonuses.
The specialized media also returns to the fate of the screenwriters who are also doing very well. Beginning authors thus recover between 75,000 and 100,000 euros for their first film. But very quickly, the sums increase and can reach between 1 and 2 million dollars for the most experienced. The latter regularly recall their importance in Hollywood by launching strikes which can literally paralyze the industry.
