It’s Christmas before time for Star Wars and Studio Ghibli fans. The two franchises have worked together to come up with a new short film that stars Grogu, also known as Baby Yoda. It is a little gem entirely drawn by hand which is offered to subscribers of the Disney+ streaming platform. Baptized Grogu and the Susuwatari, it features the adorable little character that we have already seen in the series The Mandalorian.

A safe bet from Studio Ghibli at the helm

As for the susuwatari, they come from Ghibli’s animated films My Neighbor Totoro and Spirited away. They are little hopping balls of black soot. They are reputed to be hard-working, shy, and fearful, and they are especially terribly endearing like baby Yoda is.

The two franchises had perfectly managed the teasing of their collaboration. Thus, on November 10, Studio Ghibli tweeted a very short video incorporating the Lucasfilm logo and its own. Enough to raise the interest of fans without saying too much.

Then, this Saturday, it was with a very sober tweet that the announcement of the release of the short film on Disney+ was made official. We see Grogu levitating above his head the famous susuwatari.

This production was directed by Katsuya Kondo. The latter is known for his remarkable work in creating characters, and it is one of the sure values of the Ghibli studio. As for the music, it is by Ludwig Göransson, already at work on The Mandalorian.

It is also interesting to note that Lucasfilm has already worked in the past with Japanese animation studios. It was on the occasion of the excellent anthology series Star Wars: Visions offered on Disney+ last year. Each episode was produced by a different studio, including Kinema Citrus, Production IG, or Science SARU.

Baby Yoda is far from done with Star Wars

As for baby Yoda, it is only a taste of his adventures that is offered to us in the short film. Fans will indeed have the pleasure of finding him in season 3 of The Mandolarian which will be released on Disney+ in 2023.

A trailer has already been released. It is now almost certain that the duo between Din Djarin and Grogu will be reconstituted. Several intrigues should know a denouement, and we would like to know in particular what will be the consequences of the decision of Mando to remove his helmet.
