OVHCloud and Google Cloud are certainly competitors, but the two companies also collaborate. In 2020, the French host announced a collaboration with the Mountain View firm to offer Anthos technology to its customers.
In 2020, OVHCloud adopted Anthos technology
At the time, OVHCloud offered “a new Hosted Private Cloud offer combining Google Cloud’s Anthos technology, compatible with open source technologies, from its own dedicated, hyper-scalable infrastructure that will be fully operated and managed in Europe by OVHcloud teams.”
In other words, the idea was to provide European companies with “the latest innovations” on its own infrastructures, without having to use Google services.
“We are proud to partner with Google Cloud to jointly deliver innovative solutions that will meet Europe’s growing demands for data sovereignty. This is an important step to create a new value proposition in the European market”, declared, at the time, Michel Paulin, Managing Director of OVHcloud.
Two years later, end of the partnership
Unfortunately, this collaboration between the two companies will not last long. Quoted by AFP, the two companies indicate that they have decided, by mutual agreement, to end this collaboration through which OVHCloud used the Anthos software.
“This decision results from a jointly shared observation (…) but does not call into question either the technologies developed or the possibilities of future collaborations”, also indicates the declaration.
An update problem
Why ? Because OVHCloud and Google Cloud could not agree on how the updates will be made.
Indeed, for its offer, OVHCloud relies on the disconnection between its infrastructures and those of Google. And until now, the updates were done via sorts of USB keys that the French company connects to its infrastructures.
The problem is that Google would have informed OVHCloud about a change in the terms of these updates. Google Cloud wants to perform these updates itself, which would involve a connection between the servers of the two companies. However, this does not suit French society.
This information was revealed on the eve of the launch of the annual OVHCloud convention, a few days ago.
