He has no intention of wasting time. As soon as he was appointed co-CEO of DC Studios with Peter Safran, James Gunn is already at work. During an interview with our colleagues from The Hollywood Reporterthe director opened up about his early days at the helm of the cinematic universe.

DC Comics has already launched (too) many projects

He explains thus: “The opportunity to make DC as great as it can be and should be – that’s why I’m doing this job because I know Peter and I can do it. We’ve spent the last two days with a group of some of the best thinkers in the business, the best writers in the business, starting to map out this eight to 10 year plan of what it’s going to look like in cinema, in series, and in animation, our universe. »

His words are very reassuring, James Gunn is at work, and the least we can say is that he has his work cut out for him. Indeed, the DC franchise has been going a bit in all directions for the past few years. We thus have Matt Reeves who is working on several productions derived from his film The Batman. For his part, Todd Phillips is working on joker 2. And more Justice League spinoff movies are still in the works.

James Gunn and Peter Safran also inherit feature films that are already almost finished and which will be released in 2023. Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, Aquaman 2and Blue Beetle. Except to cancel these films as DC was able to do in the past, one can imagine that the new leaders of DC will only be able to intervene at the margin on these productions.

But as we can see, James Gunn is on the very long term, and he has every intention of reviving the DC franchise for the better. With its gallery of ultra-popular characters and its very rich universe, the saga does not have much to envy Marvel, even if the latter has taken a lot of lead with the MCU.

James Gunn is a passionate professional

In the wake of their appointments, the two new leaders expressed their optimism: “Our commitment to Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Harley Quinn and the rest of the characters in the DC stable is matched only by our commitment to the wondrous human possibilities these characters represent. »

For your part, what do you think of the arrival of James Gunn at the head of DC Comics, and do you think he will be able to catch up on Marvel? Tell us in the comments.
