New affordable yet high-performance Android smartphones are coming

The prices of smartphones are constantly rising and inflation, as well as the rise of the dollar against the euro, have not helped. In addition, many brands (Apple in the lead) no longer hesitate to sell their high-end smartphones above the psychological threshold of 1,000 euros. For the moment, this is only a trend, since it is still possible to find high-end Android smartphones for less than 1,000 euros.

Anyway, for those who don’t want to pay too much for a new smartphone, there are mid-range devices. And besides, a smartphone at 200 euros, like the Redmi Note 11, can completely meet all your needs.

And for more demanding users in terms of performance, such as gamers, there is an intermediate category that is positioned in the mid-range segment, while having characteristics close to those of premium (and very expensive) models. Examples: the Samsung Galaxy A73 or the Honor 70.

These two devices offer quite acceptable performance. But instead of using the Snapdragon 8 gen 1 chip, which powers a good part of the 2022 flagships, they use the Snapdragon 778G and 778G+ chips respectively. The Nothing Phone also uses the Snapdragon 778G.

Qualcomm has just unveiled a new chip for this category

If these mid-range smartphones, but whose characteristics approach those of premium devices, interest you, you will be delighted to learn that this week, Qualcomm unveiled a new processor for this type of device. This is the Snapdragon 782G, which precisely succeeds the processor of the Galaxy A73.

The Snapdragon 782G is a 6nm chip by TSMC, equipped with an octa-core CPU, with one high-performance ARM Cortex-A78 core capped at 2.7GHz, three Cortex-A78 cores at 2.2GHz, and four Efficiency-oriented Cortex-A55 operating up to 1.9 GHz. As for the GPU, it’s an Adreno 642L.

According to Qualcomm, thanks to this composition, the new chip gains 5% in CPU performance, and 10% in GPU performance, compared to the previous generation. Minimal improvements that are nevertheless compensated by the presence of many features that will allow manufacturers to provide high-end functionality on relatively affordable devices.

The Snapdragon 782G can accommodate up to 16 GB of LPDDR5 RAM and in terms of connectivity, it offers Wifi 6E, 5G mmWave, as well as Bluetooth 5.2. Moreover, in terms of photography, smartphones using this chip will be able to manage 200 megapixel sensors.

At the moment it is not known which smartphones will use this new component. But what is clear is that with inflation, people who normally buy high-end smartphones might turn to Snapdragon 782G-powered alternatives.

Otherwise, as a reminder, Qualcomm has already formalized its Snapdragon 8 gen 2 chip, which will equip a good part of the best Android smartphones of 2023.
