There is change in the air. Who says new year says, necessarily, new habits. Thus, from January 1, 2023, La Poste says goodbye to its famous red stamp. However, rest assured: it does not disappear completely. The electronic letter comes into play next week if you want to send an urgent letter. We explain everything about the death of the red stamp.
La Poste says goodbye to the red stamp and hello to the red e-letter
It has been there since 1849. But after 173 years of good and loyal service, the red stamp disappears. La Poste announced his death to us last July and it is now time to bid him farewell. As a reminder, the red stamp is intended for priority mail and ensures that our urgent letters are delivered the next day.
For economic and ecological reasons, La Poste has given up on the red stamp. In effect, since 2008, use of the red stamp has plummeted. According to La Poste, its distribution volume has been divided by 14 in less than fifteen years. Therefore, half-full trucks and airplanes are used to deliver your important mail.
La Poste has therefore decided to drop this famous red stamp in favor of a digital version: the red e-letter. The principle remains the same: your priority letter will arrive safely the next day. The way of doing it differs.
How to send a priority letter in 2023?
Starting next Sunday, here’s how to send urgent mail to make sure it arrives the next day. You will simply have to scan your letter or document before 8 p.m. on the La Poste website or from a post office..
La Poste employees will then print it in the recipient’s region. The mail will then be put in an envelope and distributed the following day. In addition to being more economical for La Poste and more ecological, this red electronic letter will also be faster.
By taking this decision, La Poste should reduce its carbon footprint and this will enable it to achieve the objective it has set itself. The French postal service wants to reduce its CO2 emissions and aims for net zero emissions by 2030. However, consumers will have the unpleasant surprise of seeing the sending of more expensive priority mail. From January 1, 2023, you will have to pay 1.49 euros instead of 1.43 euros to send an urgent letter.
The green stamp, on the other hand, is resisting
For classic mail, the green stamp is always there. Thus, you will be able to continue to send your postcards and other “normal” letters with the small green rectangle. All the same, it will be necessary to be less in a hurry.
Until today, a courier stamped with the green stamp took two days to arrive at its destination. From January 1st, La Poste will take its time since it will take three days for your letter to find its way to the recipient’s mailbox.
